Afghanistan: Operation Dragon Strike

There is an excellent article in this weekend's Sunday Times. Unfortunately, The Times and The Sunday Times now charge for content and even if you do pay to visit their site, you cannot share links. If you would like to read it, the link is at the end of this entry.

Anyway, this brilliant article is written by Miles Amoore, who is with the 101st Airborne, West of Kandahar and it talks about the dangers the troops face.
In this piece by Mr Amoore, the men of 75th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Air Bourne Division enter the village of Zendadan, with the intention of presenting the villagers with "freedom sheep" but the sheep hadn't arrived so instead they set about delivering food and blankets to celebrate its libration from the Taliaban.
What they had not realised was that they had walked into a trap laced with IEDs. About 15 men had crossed a narrow footbridge over an irrigation dicth on the outskirts of the village when the bomb exploded beneath a 25 year old Afghan solider named "Ali".

The injured were saved by the rest of the men and injuries of one ( 25 year old Specialist Robert Trujillo from Denver, Colorado, U.S.A) are described:
"When they rolled him onto his back...blood pulsed from two gaping wounds on the inside of his thighs. His fingers were smashed and limp. Small stone fragments were embedded in the blackened flesh of his arms and legs."
Two of the soldiers took charge and:
"stuffed gauze into the open wounds as pools of blood began to leak into the dirty beneath him"
They tried to keep Trujillo conscious by encouraging him to talk about his son and how he met his wife. The mine was said to have shattered every bone in his body. Thankfully he was air lifted for medical attention.

The squadron commander, Colonel Thomas McFayden said about this mine field:
"It is strange, you try to bring in food to feed the people and all they want to do is kill you. It is a strange kind of warfare"
Operation Dragon Strike is aimed at flushing insurgents from their heartlands around the strategic city of Kandahar. Winning here is fundamental to Obama's strategy.

They soldiers move in fields of Marijuana crops. At one point, as the sun began to set, Mr Amoore writes, that some Afghan soldiers who had plucked the marijuana leaves from the field during the day rolled them up and began to smoke and one said:
"it gives you courage".
Once during the battle, the Appache helicopter, called for back up,  rounds aimed at Taliban narrowly miss US soldiers. A soldier with the last name of Labonte, who has recently recovered from being shot in the head by a sniper in Iraq said of this near miss:
"Talk about danger close. It's one hell of a day when your own 30mm goes off and all you can hear is ping ping ping as the rounds land around you. they couldn't see us and we couldn't see them. We were lucky."
The American offered villagers guns to keep the Taliban out. They refused. One village elder said:
The war will come to my village if the Americans build their bases here. They (Taliban) will kill me before I kill then. Who will feed my kids if I die?"
Commanding officer, Captain  Bret Matzenbacher replied:
"This is not even my country. If I step on a bomb and get blown into six pieces, who is going to feed my kids? We will take on the Taliban no matter what, but it would be a hell of a lot easier if we had your support".
The following day, Taliban returned to this newly liberated village and stole the "freedom sheep" given to the villagers. They even made the villagers pay for two they had eaten.

Emma Thompson's attack on slang!

Emma Thompson recently revealed that it really annoys her when today's kids do not make an effort to speak properly. She said:
"We have to re-invest in the idea of articulacy as a form of personal freedom and power."
She added that when kids use words like "like" or "innit" it makes them sound stupid!

What do you think? is she right? or should she just chill? :)

Hillay's headache

An interesting article. I really wouldn't want Hillary to miss out on this Presidential race. The best solution would be to have Hillary run for President and Obama as her running mate. This way, Obama can get a bit experience and then he can run after Hillary has ended her tenure...

OK the link:

Gordon Brown is a brave man

I suppose one can trust the country in a man's hand who goes to the dentist and refuses to use painkiller :-)

Stock markets turmoil explained

So like the majority of ordinary citizens I had questions of my own about the recent events at the stock markets around the world. This is a pretty easy to understand Q&A from the good old folks at the BBC.

Most Dangerous Destinations 2007

Please exclude these destinations from your "holidays 2007". Unless...you like adventure! (jokes aside, the situation in most of these places mentioned is very tragic and I really hope and wish ,that the problems get fixed and peace prevails).

Update from Britain: Our Home Secretary's brain is missing and oh we only have space for 50 inmates in our prisons. Or in other words, we have some problems...

Threat to New York as centre of finance

FINANCIAL NEWS

New York is facing a threat to its position as the world’s leading financial centre, according to a report commissioned by Michael Bloomberg, the city’s mayor, and New York Senator Chuck Schumer. If current trends continue, New York could lose up to 7% of its market share, equivalent to 60,000 jobs, over the next five years. But much of that loss would be prevented if the US implemented legal and regulatory reforms, says the report by McKinsey, the consultancy. The report, to be published on Monday, says New York has also been losing out in areas such as derivatives, where Wall Street chief executives say they have been shifting business to London because of its more attractive legal and regulatory environment.

I always feel very proud when London does better than any other city in the world. Way to go!

Hillary Clinton Vs Barack Obama

I believe this is going to be an interesting race to watch. I know there are the other candidates but personally I think the race is going to be narrowed down to these 2. Hillary has a lot going for her except for one thing that is that she supported the war in Iraq. A lot of die hard Democrats are against the war in Iraq so she has a lot of explaining to do. To be honest with you, I am also interested in hearing her reasons. Barack, on the other hand, is fairly new. He didn't vote for or against the war in Iraq because at that time he wasn't even in the Senate! He is very popular and likable. But I believe, Hillary has the money, and like it or not, it comes down to who can raise the funds.
Personally I think it should be Hillary who should get the Democratic endorsement. Why? Because at this time USA's profile and image is in tatters thanks to W. I believe, they need someone strong, experienced and charming. Hillary is all 3. Barack is an unknown figure on the international stage. He needs more experience. His time will come! Anyway, this is my opinion. Lets see what happens.

Hillary Clinton joins 2008 race

So it's confirmed. It was one of the worst kept secrets. I can't say what type of president she will be but I can say for sure that she is going to be better than W. Anyway, I really admire Hillary. I think she is a legend. If I could vote in American elections, I would vote for her. I find her strong, independent, smart and over all very likable. I would love to meet her one day.

The other contender Barack Obama may give her the run for her money. He seems rather charming and very popular. Young as well. I don't know him (as if I know Hilary!) but he gives a very good impression,so crowds are definitely gonna like him.

There is a sales gap at GAP

While I was reading the FT today (Financial Times), I noticed this article about the possible sale of Gap (the US clothing store). I am not going to put the link to that FT article here because it isn't available without subscription. I might scan it and put it here. I have found a free link from The San Francisco Chronicle though (at the end).
Anyway, back to the news. I am not at all surprised by this possible sale. I used to love GAP. It was sexy, colourful and nice. For the past 3 years (the last thing I bought from Gap was in 2004), I have not been impressed with the quality at all. It feels like that they try and get the big stars as the faces of their campaigns but they forget that it's not Sarah Jessica Parker or Seal that customers are going to buy. It’s the clothes! The clothes are appalling. The colours are awful. There is beige, there is very very light pink and there is more beige, more light pink, maybe a disgusting brown shade...but there is no variety. They have tops for girls. A small top that looks so well out of proportion. The jackets that just look so old fashioned. What happened? I know a lot of other people who have stopped shopping there.

The prices as well are just ridiculous. Why would I spend £25 pounds on a tank top when I can get something much better, sexier and cheaper from a more trendy shop say for example Zara or Promod?

Struggling Gap considers sale

Gap, the largest US speciality clothing retailer and an icon of American casual style, is considering a range of options, including a sale of the company, following more than two years of slumping sales.
According to people familiar with the matter, Gap has in the past few weeks given bankers at Goldman Sachs a mandate to examine the company's strategic alternatives, raising speculation that it could be taken private in a leveraged buy-out worth more than $16bn.
